About Us
RJ Wafer is a photographer from Brooklyn, NY. He’s made a career out of bringing new technologies to market, including work with 3D printing, telepresence robotics, VR and AR projects, and for the last 25 years, he’s also taken pictures and shot video for live music.
As part of a group that built high end VR cameras (and tested them), RJ spent years shooting in spherical imagery which is reflected in his photographs. His current work is done using an Insta 360 Leica camera.
In 2018, RJ suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident in LA, leaving a shoot at the Bootleg Theatre in Los Angeles. In 2023, he received a second TBI during an armed robbery in New Orleans. In both instances, light and sound became difficult to handle, and he needed ways to get back out into the world while maintaining control over his environment. His solution? Donning noise canceling headphones and dark sunglasses while he was out taking pictures. "Photography became my way of easing back into the noisy, chaotic world around me."
Given his background, 360 photography is the perfect way to capture the images he envisions. RJ orients his shots into tiny planets and prints them on sheet metal to bring out the light. He started showing publicly in 2023 after some buildup on Instagram convinced him to take a stab at sharing his work more formally.
RJ's work has been shown at The Other Art Fair (Brooklyn), the Fridge Art Fair (NYC), Joshua Tree National Parks Association Gallery (California), One of a Kind Show and Sale (Chicago), Not Another Gallery (Brooklyn), Greenpoint Gallery (Brooklyn), One Art Space Gallery (NYC), Superfine SF & NYC, and Pancakes & Booze (Brooklyn). He was recently noted as an 'artist to watch' by Saatchi Art in advance of the May 2024 The Other Art Fair in Brooklyn. RJ will be showing at the Tokyo International Art Fair in November, as well.
